The Master of Arts in Teaching ~ Community College Education (MAT) distance learning program is an interdisciplinary degree designed to prepare students for a career in community college teaching with a special emphasis on recruiting and training minority faculty in order to address the acute shortage of minority faculty working within the community college system nationwide.

All students are required to complete a teaching practicum at a rural community college under the supervision of a Master Teacher. The practicum includes teaching at least one (1) three-hour course for an entire semester and participating in other activities expected of community college teachers. Students are required to spend a minimum of 225 clock hours in the community college environment, which may include but is not limited to teaching, attending meetings, participating in extracurricular activities, etc.

Bachelors degree with grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale on the last half of the bachelor’s degree, GRE score results, three letters of reference, and indication of teaching specialty (e.g., history) in the purpose statement.

Middle and high school teachers with bachelor’s degree from an institution that is accredited by its regional accrediting association. Either a cumulative baccalaureate grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the latter half of your baccalaureate meet departmental admissions criteria

The program is taught in groups of 20 to 25 students over a 24-month period. All degree work is completed online, with no residency requirements or classroom attendance.

A four-year bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States. A minimum GPA of 3.0.

Two letters of recommendation. A resume and an essay of approximately 500 words.
